Ramble Content

Making a painting requires a level of solitude that scares many people away. A painter spends massive amounts of time alone in a studio space confronting the blank canvas. The resistance and self doubt that one must overcome on a daily basis can be daunting. This painting Going Within is about that daily grind.

A few months back I stepped out of the solitude and teamed up with the folks at Ramble Content to do a little collaboration. They brought in their equipment and filmed me starting a big painting and asked me questions about what I was doing and why I was doing it. We then put together a Show at their Headquarters in Downtown SLC, that featured some of the paintings I was working on and a Documentary they made about my paintings.

And Yet They Had Hope

Paintings are often mirrors that reflect us back to ourselves without us realizing it. When I was in Terzian Galleries dropping some paintings off, I loved hearing comments about this piece. The people coming in, either loved it or hated it, there was no in between. They didn't know I was listening, or that I had painted it. Their feedback was fascinating to me. The title explains my views.

Sometimes paintings come together at the right moment to put scattered puzzle pieces together and make something you were confused about, a bit more clear. Sometimes paintings appear on the surface to seem like a fun lighthearted scene, when in reality they come directly from the soul of the person who made it.

There is something so beautiful and graceful about the way horses run. I could paint them forever. I am glad this one found a good home.

Divers

Something about these Divers is so fascinating. They were very daring to head underwater not knowing if their gear was going to help or hurt them. It took them hours to get into these suits, I doubt they could get out quickly.

Defying Gravity

This painting is about all of us. We all at some point have to take a risk. And while not as drastic as balancing on the edge of a building, we sometimes feel that it may be. Greatness is usually on the other side of the fear we feel. Add to that the voices of doubt that constantly challenge our hopes, dreams and beliefs. The "voices of reason" often seem to add to the resistance and holds us back. 

I say risk, dream, grow, evolve, challenge the mountain and yourself.

Helper One Show at Finch Lane Gallery

I recently participated in a show at the Finch Lane Gallery. The show centers around Paul Davis, Dave Dornan, John Erickson, and Tony Smith and what they did at the U of U and in Helper, Utah. The show is filled with amazing paintings and will be hanging until the end of February. If you are into art I'd highly recommend stopping in.

Dropped off some paintings to the David Ericson Gallery this past month. Dave is a great guy and the roster of artists is amazing. What an honor to join their team.

Going Forth

Paintings are similar to mirrors, they reflect back more about us than we realize. Our reactions often expose things about us that we do not expect.

Going Forth for me is a painting about hope, clinging to the one light on the horizon and moving toward it. Others have told me it expresses the exact opposite, or at least until they read the title.

Abandoning Reason

I started these sketches the night of Brexit. I was pretty shocked at what had happened and how a nation made a decision without knowing what it meant. The news of them googling "What is Brexit" after having voted for it, shocked me. 

So I started thinking that we often make decisions without realizing the consequences. Some are small and meaningless while some are gigantic and horrific. I started thinking that three British bobbies jumping in the harbor was a funny symbol of reason being abandoned. The positive is that while a little cheeky, these men will dry off and learn from their mistakes and hopefully we as a society can do the same. It is dripping in irony of the super logical jumping fully clothed into the water. Almost as though Sherlock Holmes himself had lost his mind.

I was recently on the news after painting a piece for my buddy's wife. It was an emotional experience painting a little angel who recently passed away. This family is stronger than any of us realize.

Every spring I watch Ken Burn's series on the Civil War. It is one of the best documentary series I have ever seen. I love all the old photos they share. This little face has haunted me for a while now, so I had to paint him. I have wondered what his eyes witnessed as our nation went to war with itself.

One-man Show at the Terzian Galleries in Park City

This weekend I am having a one man show at the Terzian Galleries in Park City, Utah. There is an opening on Friday February 3rd, from 6-9pm and Saturday the 4th from 3-6pm. There will be 18 new paintings available for viewing. All of the paintings are blue collar workers depicted in the midst of their work. This piece is titled Moving in Common Rhythm, oil on canvas, 42"x 42".

I was recently invited to participate in a show at the Tucson Museum of Art. They included these two train paintings of mine.
